The film showcase, titled ‘KINOOCEANY,’ will present 23 Portuguese films, including both short and feature-length films, across four Polish cities between April and September, starting in Katowice.
Curated by programmers Agnieszka Szeffel and João Ricardo Oliveira, this film series aims to showcase Portugal and its reality through cinema and, conversely, portray Portuguese cinema through a depiction of the country, as stated in a press release.
The opening of ‘KINOOCEANY’ on Friday in Katowice will feature ‘Os Verdes Anos’ (1963) by Paulo Rocha, a fundamental film in Portuguese Cinema Novo, which will be presented by director Manuel Mozos. Mozos will also be present on Saturday to discuss his film ‘Xavier’ (2003).
The selection for this initial showcase includes films such as ‘A Invenção do Amor’ (1965) by António Campos, ‘Um Adeus Português’ (1985) by João Botelho, ‘O Sangue’ (1989) by Pedro Costa, ‘John From’ by João Nicolau, ‘Cidade Rabat’ (2023) by Susana Nobre, ‘Arena’ (2009) by João Salaviza, ‘Quem Espera por Sapatos de Defunto Morre Descalço’ (1970) by João César Monteiro, and ‘The Nothingness Club — Não Sou Nada’ (2023) by Edgar Pêra.
The closing film will be ‘Sob a Chama da Candeia’ (2023) by André Gil Mata.
The showcase will be presented over a ten-day period in each city: from April 4 to 13 in Katowice, from June 6 to 15 in Lodz, from June 20 to 26 in Warsaw, and from September 5 to 14 in Gdansk.
‘KINOOCEANY’ is supported by the Portuguese Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual and the Polish Film Institute.
