Francisco Assis “convinced” that Carneiro will be the leader of the PS: “I will support.”

Francisco Assis, a Member of the European Parliament from the Socialist Party (PS), expressed on Friday that José Luís Carneiro possesses the necessary qualifications to lead the party following Pedro Nuno Santos’s departure. Assis announced his support for Carneiro’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General.

“If the question is whether José Luís Carneiro has the necessary qualifications to lead the party, my answer is clearly yes. He has demonstrated this many times throughout his political life, in various positions he has held,” Assis stated in an interview with CNN Portugal.

The MEP highlighted that the former minister “has leadership qualities” and indicated that “everything suggests José Luís Carneiro will be the next Secretary-General of the Socialist Party.”

However, Assis acknowledged that “the challenges facing the PS are not for one person alone” but require “the entire party,” following the legislative election results on May 18.

Assis also expressed enthusiasm for Carneiro’s potential leadership, saying, “I’m convinced and would be delighted for him to become [Secretary-General of the PS] and I will support José Luís Carneiro. I spoke with him this week.”

Assis also praised Pedro Nuno Santos, recognizing his “long trajectory” in politics and noting his “highly patriotic” performance during his leadership of the Socialist Party.

“He did not obstruct the Government’s program, contributed to the approval of the State Budget, rejected motions of no-confidence, and was always open to dialogue,” Assis exemplified.

On the same day, Miguel Prata Roque, a former Secretary of State and commentator, disclosed his consideration to enter the PS leadership race against José Luís Carneiro. His objective is to challenge the “empty consensuses” and attempts to “muzzle the internal debate” within the party.

The National Commission of the PS will meet on Saturday morning at 11:00 in Lisbon to review the legislative election results and approve electoral calendars and regulations.

Following Pedro Nuno Santos’s departure from the Secretary-General position after the party’s third-worst legislative election result in history last Sunday, several names have been suggested in recent days to fill the leadership vacancy. Some, like former Minister of the Presidency Mariana Vieira da Silva, initially expressed willingness but confirmed on Thursday they were stepping aside, leaving Carneiro as the sole contender for now.
