Free concert with Mariza in Coimbra celebrates 735 years of the University

The event, titled ‘Flores do Verde Ramo’, also marks the 700th anniversary of the death of King Dinis and is part of the Sons da Cidade project, which aims to celebrate the 12th anniversary of the inclusion of the ‘University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia’ in the UNESCO World Heritage list, the United Nations organization for Education, Science and Culture.

Despite free admission, the concert requires tickets, which can be obtained, with a maximum of two per person, starting on the 16th at the UC Tourism Store and the Convento São Francisco.

In a note sent to the Lusa agency, the University of Coimbra highlighted that the cultural event, promoted annually by the Association RUAS – Recriar a Universidade, Alta e Sofia, takes place this year from the 16th to the 22nd, under the theme ‘Verses of Time, Voices of Heritage’, focusing on reflection and artistic intervention.

According to the statement, the multidisciplinary program “invites reflection and intervention on heritage and revisiting spaces and cultural works through concerts, project presentations, and guided tours.”

The Sons da Cidade begins on Monday, the 16th, with the presentation of the preliminary study for the rehabilitation of the complex of the Associação Académica de Coimbra, by architect Gonçalo Byrne.

On Tuesday, the 17th, in the Senate Room of the UC, the management plan for ‘University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia’ is presented, and in the theme of heritage, on Saturday, the 21st, the Estaleiro Aberto initiative offers two visits to the ongoing works at the Gerais building.

On the last day of the program, Sunday, the 22nd—marking 12 years since the UNESCO classification—a guided visit to the colleges of Rua da Sofia will take place in the morning, a concert by musicians from the Orquestra Clássica do Centro at the bridge-building on the same street (over the Central avenue) at 6:30 PM, and the first screening of the documentary ‘Salatinas: Memórias da Velha Alta de Coimbra’, produced by Tiago Cerveira, Rafael Vieira, and Filipa Queiroz, at 9:15 PM at the Porta Férrea square.
