Friday of intense heat. Weekend will be (a little) cooler

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts for this Friday, August 16, a day of clear skies and intense heat with temperatures reaching 40°C (or very close) in several districts of mainland Portugal.

The hottest districts will be Évora and Santarém with a maximum of 40°C, Setúbal, Beja and Castelo Branco with 39°C, Lisbon with 38°C, Portalegre with 37°C, Braga and Coimbra with 36°C, and Vila Real and Bragança with 35°C. In Porto, temperatures are expected to rise to 31°C.

The coolest district in mainland Portugal today (and the only one below 30°C) is Aveiro, where temperatures are not expected to exceed 27°C.

In the Azores, temperatures continue to reach 30°C, which is atypical for the region, even in summer.

For Madeira, where a concerning fire continues to burn in Ribeira Brava and Câmara de Lobos, maximum temperatures are expected to reach 31°C.

On Saturday, the sky will be cloudier across the country, except for Alentejo, Algarve, and Madeira, where the sun continues to shine. Temperatures remain high but drop slightly in some districts.

Évora is expected to register 40°C again, Beja and Castelo Branco 39°C, Portalegre 38°C, Setúbal 37°C, Santarém 36°C, and Sines 35°C.

According to IPMA, in Lisbon, the maximum temperature drop from Friday to Saturday will be 7°C, meaning that on August 17, the capital should not register more than 31°C.

Porto, along with Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, and Leiria, will be among the coolest districts in the country, with a maximum of 26°C.

On Sunday, the drop in maximum temperature will be more pronounced, with IPMA predicting that the sky will remain somewhat cloudy across the country.

The hottest districts will be Faro, with a maximum of 39°C, Castelo Branco, Beja, and Évora with 37°C, Portalegre with 36°C, Bragança and Vila Real with 33°C, Setúbal, Santarém, Viseu, and Braga with 32°C.

In Lisbon, temperatures should not exceed 29°C, and in Porto, 26°C.

It’s worth noting that a large part of the interior North and Center of the country and two municipalities in the Algarve are at maximum risk of fire today due to the heat.
