“Friendship.” Chega’s vice-president calls himself an “ally” of supremacist group

The vice-president of Chega, Pedro Frazão, offered a message of support to the supremacist group Reconquista during its third congress on Saturday. The deputy emphasized that the party led by André Ventura is an “ally” of the movement, which openly opposes the presence of immigrants in Portugal and challenges the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community.

It is with great honor that I send this message to the Reconquista congress, which I know to be one of the homes of the patriotic Christian right in Portugal. […] I deeply believe that politics should stem from our faith, love for our homeland, and duty to our Portuguese people. That is why I salute you and your work, because I know you give voice to these values with much courage and conviction,” Pedro Frazão stated in his address at the supremacist group’s gathering.

The Chega vice-president remarked that “we live in times of moral confusion, where pluralism tries every day to erase our roots,” while highlighting that “there are many challenges, and the greatest of all is ensuring the future of our people through remigration,” which he sees as “the only policy capable of restoring order, security, and hope in our country.”

“But Chega, the Chega party, with allies like you, is here to remind everyone that the defense of Portugal also involves defending our culture, our families, and our Portuguese Christian identity,” he added.

Pedro Frazão also greeted Chega’s “European partners” present at the congress, including “friends from the AfP [Germany’s far-right party],” as well as “all those who have not given up the fight for a Europe of sovereign nations.”

We are faithful to our history and to our God. Let us move forward together, my friends, because the real right is rising in Portugal and across Europe, and you must count on us. With great friendship,” he concluded.

Notícias ao Minuto contacted Chega regarding this intervention and is awaiting a response.

The meeting venue became unavailable after the head of the Colégio Luso-Francês auditorium in Porto discovered it was a “political event, not complying with the regulations in force.” It also contradicted what was “contractualized” with the organizers, as the group had described the congress as a “cultural event.”

Nevertheless, the meeting was eventually held at Clube Maia Sport, which justified on Sunday that it works “in various capacities, including partnerships with corporate events.”

“Last Saturday, we hosted an event organized by a political movement. As this was the first of its kind, we clarify that our political convictions (which are quite varied) are not a factor in authorizing the events but rather the legality of the promoters,” it stated in a social media release.

The entity described itself as “a company with clear goals” while affirming that “the freedom of expression conquered by the 25th of April is not to be ‘used’ only when convenient.”

We reaffirm that our doors are open to ALL political/ideological movements as long as they are legal. Following the completion of the event, it is noted, as it could not be otherwise, that everything proceeded normally. The only abnormality was the cowardly insults hidden on social media, both on our pages and those of various local institutions,” it stated.

It should be noted that last year, Reconquista rented the Lisbon Municipal Assembly (AML) headquarters to hold its congress, with the municipal body clarifying that the group had posed as a “youth collective” associated with the Chega party.

The proposal, reportedly “submitted by an individual – a woman whose name did not raise any alerts,” aimed to conduct “a series of speeches on current events, the press, and European society and culture,” some delivered by “notable national and international figures.”

The president of Reconquista denied the allegations, asserting that the AML realized “it was a mistake to approve the event and, […] to legitimize themselves in the public eye, they use the justification of understanding that [the group was] directly [associated] or that [it was] part of Chega.”
