The Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), Pedro Nuno Santos, expressed on Tuesday his hope that a parliamentary inquiry into Luís Montenegro’s family company, Spinumviva, would not be necessary, suggesting the possibility of abandoning the commission.
During the Fábrica 2030 conference in Lisbon, he stated, “I have the expectation that, by the end of the election campaign, we can clarify what remains to be clarified.”
Luís Montenegro responded during a visit to Madeira, telling journalists that he had not heard the opposition leader’s statements.
“I did not hear [Pedro Nuno Santos’s statements], but I am focused, from the beginning of this pre-campaign and this electoral process, on continuing to provide the Portuguese people with solutions to the real problems they face daily and want to see addressed,” Montenegro mentioned, stressing that this is his focus.
Amid the presentation of the PSD/CDS-PP coalition candidates for the Madeira electoral circle in the May 18 legislative elections, the current Prime Minister reiterated that the country was experiencing a political crisis because the opposition did not want to ensure the stability achieved by the government through daily work.
“We only went to elections because the opposition feared the government’s success and thought more of itself, its partisan interest, than of the people’s interest,” he said.

The leader of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, declined to comment on the PS leader’s statements, emphasizing that he is focused on providing solutions to the “real problems” of the Portuguese people.

Rui Rocha, President of Iniciativa Liberal, criticized Pedro Nuno Santos for being “irresponsible.” He stated, “Either Pedro Nuno Santos has access to information that the general public does not have—if so, he should be the first to make it available to the Portuguese people—or, if he has the same information as a month ago, it is absolutely surprising, not to mention irresponsible.”
Rocha emphasized that it is irresponsible for someone who wanted to bring the country to a crisis to now abandon the fundamental proposal of a parliamentary inquiry to clarify the issue.

The leader of IL today accused the PS Secretary-General, Pedro Nuno Santos, of irresponsibility for considering dismissing a parliamentary inquiry into Spinumviva, calling it “absolutely surprising” without new information on the matter.

It should be recalled that, in March, the PS leader announced the establishment of a parliamentary inquiry into the case of Luís Montenegro’s family company, arguing that such a commission was a tool available to the party to clarify doubts.
