The government approved changes on Thursday regarding the payment of the Single Circulation Tax (IUC), a move previously indicated by the Ministry of Finance. What will change? Simply put: the tax will no longer be paid during the vehicle’s registration month but will have a unified payment date – although these changes will not commence until 2027.
The Executive approved, in the Council of Ministers, “a draft legislative authorization law to amend the provisions of the Single Circulation Tax (IUC) Code related to the tax settlement, which is required on the vehicle’s registration anniversary,” according to a statement sent to newsrooms.
“Since this model is likely to generate operational and administrative difficulties and increases the risk of involuntary non-compliance, the regime is being altered,” explains the government led by Luís Montenegro.

What exactly is changing? Essentially, the IUC will no longer be payable during the vehicle’s registration month; instead, there will be a single payment date, with the option for installment payments. Details are available here.
