During the early hours of Monday, July 7, a 33-year-old woman was admitted to a private hospital in Mirandela with back pain, only to unexpectedly give birth without knowing she was pregnant. Unfortunately, the baby passed away by the end of Tuesday, July 8.
The incident occurred when the woman arrived at the Permanent Medical Care facility at Hospital Terra Quente, complaining of “severe back pain” and unaware that “she was pregnant.” During examinations, she “unexpectedly went into labor.”
The hospital, in a Facebook post, stated, “the medical team on duty reacted swiftly and effectively.”
During the birth, the woman was assisted by a nurse, while a doctor ensured her clinical stabilization and coordinated with INEM to activate the necessary emergency resources.
Upon arrival, the baby, who was “still premature,” had already been born and was “stable, as was the mother.”
Subsequently, both mother and child were transferred to the neonatology unit at Hospital de Vila Real.

Baby died on Tuesday
It has now been reported that the baby died at the end of Tuesday at the Centro Materno Infantil do Norte in Porto. A hospital source disclosed that the baby died at the Centro Materno Infantil do Norte in Porto.
No further details on the cause of death have been provided. However, it was mentioned that the 33-year-old woman has been discharged from the hospital.

It should be noted that in three weeks, three babies have died in the Lisbon and Leiria region. In the first two cases, two pregnant women lost the babies due to the closure of emergency services.
The third woman, who was 26 weeks pregnant, was being transported by the Nazaré Volunteer Firefighters to the Hospital de Leiria when she gave birth in the ambulance, and the baby subsequently died.

In an interview, the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, expressed “deep regret” over the outcome of the first two cases, which were the only known cases at the time of the interview, stating that they “would have been difficult to prevent.” She also noted that “medicine still cannot solve everything” and emphasized that “we cannot normalize the idea that having emergency services closed is normal.”

Last Thursday, July 10, a pregnant woman had her baby in a car en route to the Hospital Garcia de Orta in Almada. The vehicle had to stop on the roadside along the IC21, between Barreiro and the A2 Highway.
The woman resides in Barreiro but headed to Almada because the obstetric emergency services at Hospital de Nossa Senhora do Rosário were closed.
