Fuel prices: Forecasts are already available for next week

Next week, fuel prices are expected to show a mixed trend: diesel prices are expected to remain stable, while gasoline prices are expected to decrease.

The Automobile Club of Portugal (ACP), citing industry sources, indicates that gasoline prices are set to drop by two cents.

“If the forecasts for next week are confirmed, the average price of simple diesel will remain at 1.571 euros per liter, while the price of simple gasoline 95 will drop to 1.669 euros per liter,” states the ACP.

Currently, according to the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG), the average price per liter of diesel in Portugal is 1.571 euros, and gasoline is 1.689 euros.

The ACP notes that the forecasts released this Friday “are based on the assumption of the continuation of the extraordinary tax reduction measures applied by the Government to mitigate price increases.”

“The measures in force include the reduction of the ISP (which equals a reduction of VAT from 23% to 13%), a compensation mechanism whereby the ISP is reduced in relation to the additional VAT revenue, and the suspension of updating the carbon tax,” recalls the ACP.

What happened this week?

This week began with a reduction in fuel prices, as predicted at the end of last week, according to the average prices updated by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG).

The price of simple gasoline 95 fell from 1.721 euros per liter to 1.694 euros per liter between Friday and Monday, marking a reduction of 2.7 cents.

Meanwhile, the price of simple diesel dropped from 1.613 euros per liter to 1.577 euros per liter also between Friday and Monday. Overall, it is a reduction of 3.6 cents.

The daily average prices, published by the DGEG, “are calculated based on prices reported by fuel stations, weighted with the quantities sold in the last known period, incorporating discounts applied at fueling stations such as fleet cards and others.” They are based on the information from 2,959 active fueling stations.

Amid significant price increases a few weeks ago, the Minister of the Presidency indicated that the Government is monitoring the evolution of fuel prices but considers the impacts to be “largely potential” for now, not ruling out the possibility of taking measures if there are “simultaneously very significant and lasting” increases.

António Leitão Amaro emphasized, however, that the Government is attentive and monitoring price developments and assured that if there are “increases that are simultaneously very significant and lasting, the Government will naturally take measures accordingly.”
