The local government announced an enhancement of waste disposal containers, primarily along the Avenida Arriaga/Largo da Restauração, Avenida do Mar, and Avenida Sá Carneiro.
One of the highlights of this year’s program, themed “Dream of Flowers,” is the allegorical parade scheduled for the upcoming Sunday afternoon. This event will feature 1,700 participants distributed among 13 groups, alongside a float designed by Madeiran decorator João Egídio.
“Following the Flower Festival parade, the customary cleaning operation will take place, encompassing sweeping, disinfection, waste collection, and container removal,” stated the Funchal City Council in a release on the island of Madeira.
The council added that for this post-parade cleanup operation, approximately 62 workers and 15 vehicles—including street sweepers, small vehicles, and open-box and waste collection vehicles—will be on duty between 3:00 PM and 10:00 PM.
In addition to the parade route, located on Avenida Sá Carneiro and Avenida do Mar, all areas in the center of Funchal hosting other festivities, such as Avenida Arriaga, Praça da Restauração, and Praça do Município, will be maintained clean. The Hope Wall will also be constructed by over 300 children from local schools, it added.
The Flower Festival includes various activities such as exhibitions, floral carpets, a market with 25 stalls, the 70th Flower Exhibition, and a wide range of musical entertainment featuring folklore groups and orchestras.
The event, organized by the Regional Secretariat of Tourism, Environment, and Culture, represents a regional government investment of approximately 911,000 euros and is expected to result in an estimated 95% hotel occupancy rate, according to a regional executive source at the festival’s press conference.
