Funchal extends strong maritime agitation warning until the end of Tuesday.

Based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) concerning the general weather conditions (wind and sea) for the coastal areas of the Madeira archipelago, the maritime authority has indicated that waves on the northern coast are expected to “gradually increase to three to four meters” in height, with waves reaching up to three meters on the southern part.

Regarding wind conditions, it is anticipated that winds will be from the southern quadrant, described as “moderate to fresh, at times very fresh from the end of the day, becoming moderate westerly in the afternoon”.

Visibility is expected to be “good to moderate, occasionally poor during the morning”, the forecast adds.

The island’s maritime authority emphasizes recommendations to “the entire maritime community and the general public regarding necessary precautions, both when preparing for a trip to sea and when at sea or in coastal zones”.

Advised measures include reinforcing moorings and maintaining strict vigilance on docked and anchored vessels, avoiding walks near the sea or in areas exposed to turbulent seas, and abstaining from leisure fishing activities, especially near cliffs and steep areas frequently hit by wave breaks, as stated in the maritime authority’s advisory.
