Funchal issues a strong wind warning for the Madeira archipelago

The warning, issued following guidance from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), indicates fresh to very fresh winds, sometimes strong, with gusts ranging between 52 and 62 km/h.

The Captaincy of the Port of Funchal advises the entire maritime community and the general public to take necessary precautions both when preparing to go to sea and while at sea or in coastal areas. Specifically, it is recommended to reinforce the mooring of anchored and docked vessels and avoid walking in areas exposed to maritime agitation.

Strong winds are affecting operations today at Madeira International Airport, located in Santa Cruz on the island’s eastern side, with reports of 22 flight cancellations, both arrivals and departures, and at least five diversions.

The website of ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal warns that the weather forecasts indicate adverse conditions that may impact operations (departures and arrivals) and advises passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
