All districts in mainland Portugal are set to be under yellow weather warnings due to the passage of post-tropical depression Gabrielle. Districts including Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, and Lisbon are under yellow warnings for strong winds until 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, extending until noon in Santarém.
Until 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, the same districts, except Santarém, will also be under yellow warnings due to rainfall and maritime agitation. All other mainland districts will receive similar warnings for rainfall on Sunday.
The IPMA notes that the precipitation might be strong and “occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly on the western coast until mid-morning” on Sunday.
Moreover, an orange warning is maintained on Sunday for the districts of Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria, and Beja due to maritime agitation, with waves from the west/southwest reaching 5 to 6 meters and peaking at 11 meters.
This orange warning is in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Sunday for Leiria and Lisbon, extending to noon in Setúbal and until 3:00 p.m. for Beja and Faro.
The IPMA has mentioned some uncertainty regarding the path of post-tropical depression Gabrielle, which initially impacted the Azores archipelago on Thursday.
The Azorean Civil Protection reported 196 incidents in the archipelago with no injuries and required the relocation of 16 people, according to the most recent update from late morning.
The Regional Government declared an alert situation from 6:00 p.m. on Thursday to 6:00 p.m. today, leading to the closure of services and several prohibitions for the Western and Central groups, but this alert was lifted before the expected time. Schools and public services, however, remain closed.
