The deputy mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Patrocínio Azevedo, who has been remanded in custody as part of Operation Babel, has resigned from his post, the head of the local authority, Socialist Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues, announced today.
The announcement was made in the run-up to the executive meeting agenda.
Patrocínio Azevedo has been remanded in custody as part of Operation Babel, by decision of the Porto Criminal Investigation Court announced on May 19.
Although remanded in custody, Mr. Azevedo did not immediately renounce his warrant.
This main process of Operation Babel focuses on “the violation of the rules and instructions of urban authorization processes in favor of developers associated with high-density, large-scale projects, involving real estate interests of the order of 300 million euros, through the offer and acceptance of compensation of a pecuniary nature”.
The mayor of Gaia, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues, announced on May 22, also at the municipal executive meeting, that the vice-presidency would be held by councillor Marina Mendes, responsible for education and social action.
