
The army today expressed “profound sorrow” over the death of the April captain Amadeu Garcia dos Santos at the age of 89, remembering him as “one of its most remarkable soldiers.”
In a statement, the branch mourns the death of the former Chief of the Army Staff and extends “deepest condolences” to his family and friends.
“The army is in mourning for losing one of its most remarkable Soldiers. His life and legacy warrant profound recognition and enduring respect for his memory, serving as a source of motivation and pride for all those who serve in this centuries-old Institution,” the text states.
According to the branch, the wake will be held on Sunday from 16:00 to 23:00 at the chapel of the Military Academy in Lisbon.
On the 7th of Monday, the wake will resume at 10:00, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00. Subsequently, the funeral procession will proceed to the Alto de São João Cemetery, where the body will be cremated at 13:00.
Garcia dos Santos was one of six Armed Forces officers who commanded the military coup of April 25, 1974.
During António Guterres’s PS government, Garcia dos Santos presided over the Autonomous Road Board (JAE), from which he resigned after exposing corruption cases.
He served as Chief of the Army Staff between 1982 and 1983.
He was Secretary of State for Public Works in the II, III, and IV Provisional Governments led by Prime Minister Vasco Gonçalves.
