
The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, expressed sorrow today over the passing of General Amadeu Garcia dos Santos, the former Chief of the General Staff of the Army and an April military figure, highlighting his “remarkable military and civic legacy.”
“General Amadeu Garcia dos Santos, former Chief of the General Staff of the Army and April military figure, leaves us a remarkable military and civic legacy, characterized by his love for the country and his service to Portugal,” Montenegro posted on his official account on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The Portuguese head of government extends “heartfelt condolences” to the family and friends on behalf of himself and the Government of Portugal.

Amadeu Garcia dos Santos was among the six Armed Forces officers who led the military coup on April 25, 1974.
Under the Socialist Party government of António Guterres, Garcia dos Santos headed the Autonomous Road Board (JAE), from which he resigned after exposing corruption cases.
He served as Chief of the General Staff of the Army from 1982 to 1983 and was Secretary of State for Public Works in the II, III, and IV Provisional Governments, led by Prime Minister Vasco Gonçalves.
The Army announced that the wake will be held on Sunday from 16:00 to 23:00, at the chapel of the Military Academy in Lisbon.
On Monday, July 7, the wake will resume at 10:00, followed by a Mass with the body present at 11:00. Subsequently, the funeral procession will proceed to the Cemitério do Alto de São João, where the body will be cremated at 13:00.
