GDP growth is below the government’s “ambition”

The Minister of Finance acknowledged today that the level of growth in the Portuguese economy falls short of the government’s “ambition,” but emphasized that its performance is superior to that of the eurozone amid global uncertainty.

“Our growth has been 2% or above 2%, which is still below the government’s objective and ambition, but it remains significantly higher than the eurozone average,” he stated at the closing of the conference “Portugal’s position in a changing global order,” held at Nova School of Business and Economics in Carcavelos, Oeiras.

At the event, organized by the British newspaper group Financial Times, where he spoke in English, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento noted that “the Portuguese economy has shown enormous resilience and adaptability, especially since the pandemic,” and expressed confidence in its ability to withstand external shocks.
