German family with child among victims of accident in Lisbon. Father died.

A German family was among the victims of the Elevador da Glória derailment in central Lisbon on Wednesday afternoon. The father died, the mother was transported to the hospital in critical condition, and the three-year-old son sustained minor injuries.

The father was reported to have died at the scene, and the mother was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The child was assisted by a Public Security Police (PSP) officer and is now in the care of the authorities.

The mother was transported to Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon.

In a statement released on social media, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed sorrow over the “tragic accident” in Lisbon but has not yet confirmed the presence of German nationals among the victims.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of the tragic funicular accident in Lisbon. We mourn with the families and wish the injured a speedy recovery. We are in contact with Portuguese authorities to provide support,” read a note published yesterday.

Elevador da Glória Derailment Claims 17 Lives

The accident, according to the latest report, resulted in at least 17 fatalities and 21 injuries. Among the injured are 12 women and seven men, aged between 24 and 65, and the three-year-old child.

In a press conference on Thursday, Margarida Castro Martins, director of the Civil Protection Department of the Lisbon City Council, confirmed that among the injured are two individuals of German nationality.

Among those hospitalized are also four Portuguese, two Spaniards, one Korean, one Cape Verdean, one Canadian, one Italian, one French, one Swiss, and one Moroccan.

The nationality and age of the deceased victims, which include seven men and eight women, will be disclosed later by the Public Prosecutor’s office.

One of the Deceased is André Marques, the Tram Operator

One of the deceased has been identified as André Marques, the tram operator responsible for controlling the Elevador da Glória cabin.

In a statement released late last night, the Transport Workers Union (SITRA) extended “deepest and most sincere condolences to all family, friends, and colleagues” of the victim.

The government has declared a national day of mourning for Thursday, while the Lisbon City Council has declared three days of municipal mourning.

The Elevador da Glória is operated by Carris and connects the Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in Bairro Alto, covering a distance of approximately 265 meters and is popular with tourists.
