An injured German tourist was rescued early Monday afternoon after suffering a leg injury at Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço on Madeira Island.
The Madeira Sea Rescue Association (SANAS) announced via social media that the “Santa Cruz Lifeboat Station’s vessel was deployed early this afternoon to rescue a German citizen, approximately 62 years old, who had a trauma to the right lower limb sustained at Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço.”
The woman received assistance on-site from a firefighting team and was later transported to the Dreams Madeira Resort marina, “from where she proceeded by ambulance to a healthcare facility.”
The rescue operation was coordinated by the SANAS Madeira Command and Control Center in cooperation with the Regional Civil Protection Service, IP-RAM, and the Maritime Search and Rescue Subcentre in Funchal (MRSC Funchal).
During the 2024 bathing season, SANAS reported 1,055 incidents without any fatalities.
In a summary released in November 2024, SANAS indicated that from May 1 to October 31, a team of 37 lifeguards was active, distributed across 11 beaches in the region and 13 monitoring stations.
Of the 1,055 bathers assisted during the season in the archipelago, the association stated that 713 had minor injuries and 415 incidents occurred at sea, with 322 involving individuals aged between 18 and 30.
SANAS personnel successfully completed two resuscitations and “handled various trauma situations with subsequent transport to a healthcare unit, with no loss of life,” it mentioned.
The statistics revealed 15 non-life-threatening drowning incidents, 45 exhaustion interventions, and 43 supports in breaking wave areas.
