Get ready! Temperatures will reach 44ºC and “tropical nights” are coming.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) released its weather forecast for the upcoming week, from August 4 to 10, in mainland Portugal. The institute predicts temperatures could reach up to 44ºC, with “tropical nights” expected.

In its weekly bulletin, the IPMA emphasized that “high temperatures are expected to continue next week on the mainland.”

Until Tuesday, August 5, “maximum temperatures will generally range between 36 and 43/44°C, except along the coastal strip, where they will range between 28 and 36ºC.”

From Wednesday, August 6, “a gradual decrease in maximum temperatures is expected until the weekend, with values between 30 to 39°C across most of the territory, except along the coastal strip, between 21 and 30°C.”

Between this Sunday and Tuesday, “tropical nights” are anticipated, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 25ºC. However, on Wednesday and Thursday, “tropical nights will likely be restricted to the interior.”

The IPMA previously announced in a statement on Thursday that Portugal would experience a “hot weather episode” until Wednesday.

“This hot weather episode is expected to be considerably severe, both in terms of its duration and the very high maximum temperatures,” warns the IPMA, indicating that from Sunday, maximums will vary between 36 and 44 degrees Celsius, with exceptions in some coastal areas where they will be lower.

According to the IPMA, this hot weather episode is associated with “the joint action of an anticyclone located northeast of the Azores archipelago, extending to the Bay of Biscay, and a depression extending from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula, which in its circulation carries tropical air masses, very hot and dry, originating from North Africa.”

IPMA warns that the hot weather episode is expected “likely until August 6, with a high degree of confidence.” From Sunday, maximums should vary between 36 and 44 degrees Celsius.

Due to the forecasts, the IPMA has already placed all districts of mainland Portugal, except Faro, under an orange warning between 09:00 and 18:00 on Sunday, due to the “persistence of very high maximum temperature values.”

The orange warning, the second most severe on a three-level scale, is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation.” The yellow, the least severe, is issued for risk to certain activities dependent on weather conditions.

Until Sunday morning, the 17 districts – Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre, and Braga – will be under a yellow warning, also due to the high maximum temperature values.

The district of Faro will be under a yellow warning between 09:00 on Saturday and 18:00 on Sunday, also due to the persistence of high maximum temperature values.
