An anticyclone originating from the Azores region, combined with a depression trough extending from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula, will result in a week of hot and dry weather, with mostly clear or partly cloudy skies.
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) indicates that on Thursday and Friday, the North and Center regions may experience a “temporary increase in cloudiness during the afternoon,” accompanied by showers and thunderstorms.
However, during the rest of the week, temperatures across mainland Portugal will be “above the normal climatological values for May in most areas.” In the South and the Tagus Valley regions, temperatures are expected to reach between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius for maximum readings.
Nights will be “tropical” in “some locations of the Center and South regions,” with minimum air temperatures equal to or exceeding 20 degrees Celsius.
Northern winds will be “light to moderate,” potentially becoming uncomfortable only along the west coast and highlands.
In light of the upcoming hot days, IPMA warns of a “gradual increase in the risk of rural fires” and “very high levels” of ultraviolet radiation index.
