Gilberto Gil returns to Portugal for two concerts in Lisbon and Porto

Gilberto Gil back in Portugal for two concerts in Lisbon and PortoThe first concert will take place at Lisbon’s Coliseu dos Recreios on October 30, followed by Coliseu do Porto on November 2, according to a statement from promoter IM.par.

“On his 81st birthday, Gilberto Gil announces ‘Aquele Abraço Tour’, the celebration of a 60-year career, including 50 years of world tours, begun in 1971. This autumn 2023, accompanied by his sons Bem and José, and grandson João, Gilberto Gil will pay tribute to Europe’s most prestigious theaters. Venues that have offered him a stage to present his music and the diversity of Brazilian culture,” reads the press release issued today.

The promoter stressed that the musician will perform “the most successful songs of his long career”.

Born in 1942 in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, Gilberto Gil began his musical career in the 1950s playing accordion, “inspired by Luiz Gonzaga, the sound of the radio and the processions in front of his house in the interior of Bahia, through to João Gilberto, bossa nova, and also Dorival Caymmi, with his songs steeped in the beach and coastal world”.

“From an early age, she depicts Brazil in her songs, and her musicality takes on very personal rhythmic and melodic forms. Then came her meeting with Caetano Veloso and the birth of Tropicalism, a libertarian movement that confronted the dictatorship with its attitudes and artistic creations, leading them both into exile in London”, recalls the promoter about the musician who has released almost 60 records and won nine Grammys.

A member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters since 2021, he was Minister of Culture between 2003 and 2008.

Tickets for the concert in Lisbon range from 20 to 85 euros, while in Porto they vary from 20 to 70 euros.
