Glória Elevator. Disaster team activated to expedite autopsies

The INMLCF has set an ambitious target to complete all autopsies by Thursday morning, facilitating the identification of all victims, Portuguese or foreign, as stated in a note from the Ministry of Justice.

With the activation of the mass disaster team, the permanent team at the Southern delegation (Lisbon) has been reinforced with two additional teams from the Porto and Coimbra delegations, the latter including members from Tomar.

“These two teams, each consisting of four members (doctors and technical staff, eight in total), will join the Lisbon team composed of five members,” according to the same source.

In Lisbon, the institute is also receiving voluntary assistance from its specialists willing to join the efforts, and the INMLCF president, Francisco Corte-Real, is en route to the capital accompanying the Coimbra team to oversee and coordinate the operation, the source added.

The teams will work through the night, and there may be a need for genetic or dental examinations, which could delay the identification of the victims.

The Glória Elevator in Lisbon derailed this Wednesday at 6:04 p.m. on Calçada da Glória.

The INEM announced that the accident resulted in 15 fatalities and 18 injuries, with five individuals in serious condition and 13 with minor injuries.

The government has declared a national day of mourning this Thursday.

The Glória Elevator, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores to the Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, covering a distance of about 265 meters and is highly popular among tourists.
