
The Ordem dos Engenheiros issued a statement on Wednesday night, expressing regret over the incident and stating it has offered immediate technical and institutional support to the Lisbon City Council in diagnosing the accident’s causes.
The Ordem expressed “deep condolences and solidarity with the victims and their families,” noting that the “Bastonário, the president of the Mechanical Engineering College, and other expert engineers have been monitoring the situation from the outset, along with the response from various public medical emergency services, health units, civil protection, security forces, and transport.”
“Aware of its responsibility to society, the Ordem dos Engenheiros will continue to monitor the situation, informing the public and being available to participate in necessary investigations to determine the causes of this unfortunate accident and in subsequent preventive measures, contributing as needed with engineering expertise,” the statement added.
The Glória elevator in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday at 18:04 on Calçada da Glória.
INEM reported that the accident resulted in 15 deaths and 23 injuries, with five people in serious condition and 13 with minor injuries.
The government declared a national day of mourning for this Thursday.
The Glória elevator, operated by Carris, connects the Restauradores to the São Pedro de Alcântara Garden in the Bairro Alto, along a route of about 265 meters and is a popular attraction for tourists.
