The Mission Group responsible for designing a new technological system for the future Elevador da Glória in Lisbon has been established, the Lisbon City Council revealed in a statement this Thursday.
The team includes civil engineer Luís Oliveira, Director of the Department of Structures, and mechanical engineer João Viegas, Director of the Center for Scientific Instrumentation and Information Technology at the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC). Also part of the team are Ricardo da Cunha Reis, President of the College of Engineering and Quality, and Manuel Tender, coordinator of the Occupational Safety group, representing the Order of Engineers.
Representing the Instituto Superior Técnico will be Jorge Ambrósio, a full professor specializing in Structural and Computational Mechanics.
A meeting between all the members of the Mission Group and the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, is scheduled for next week.
The city council emphasizes that it is a “priority,” along with Carris, to study “new solutions and restore normalcy as soon as possible, while simultaneously ensuring the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage that the Elevador da Glória represents for Lisbon and the country.”
Carlos Moedas highlighted, “Beyond all the answers we demand regarding this tragedy, which we want to be clarified as quickly as possible, we must also look forward and take the lead with new solutions for the future Elevador da Glória. This is precisely the trust-building work that is beginning to be prepared, bringing together some of our country’s most prestigious institutions. I thank all the dedicated and committed professionals who have been willing, from the outset, to do whatever is necessary related to this incident.”
