New forensic examinations took place Wednesday evening at Calçada da Glória in Lisbon, two weeks after an accident involving the elevator that resulted in 16 fatalities.

A spokesperson from the PJ clarified that these procedures are routine, as an accident report is being prepared, and there was no new triggering information.

The derailment occurred on the afternoon of September 3, resulting in 16 deaths and injuries to approximately twenty people, both Portuguese and foreign nationals.

Alongside the PJ, officials from the Public Security Police are also present at the site.

The preliminary results of the report by the Office of Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF) are expected in mid-October. Until then, forensic activities continue, and the issue remains a topic of discussion.

This week, Carris, the company under the jurisdiction of the Lisbon municipality, denied allegations of reduced investment in transport maintenance after reports indicated a 28% drop in costs for electrical infrastructure maintenance.

The company highlighted that the cost of maintenance activities exceeded 24.6 million euros last year, marking an increase of 32.7% compared to 2020.

Furthermore, Carris emphasized that total spending on maintenance and investment rose by 59% over the same period, reaching 45.3 million euros.

It’s noteworthy that Carris’s electrical infrastructure includes elevators like the one at Glória. “We increased Carris’s budget by 30%,” stated the current mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), who is seeking re-election in the upcoming municipal elections.
