GNR and Civil Guard conduct a cross-border pursuit simulation.

A joint exercise between the Territorial Command of Évora of the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Civil Guard of Badajoz aimed to enhance international cooperation in combating cross-border crime. The initiative sought to foster a shared security culture and to boost collaborative efforts in criminal repression.

The exercise, dubbed “Hot Pursuit,” involved around 30 GNR and Civil Guard members, engaged in various stages from initial planning to execution.

The scenario simulated a bank theft in the municipality of Mourão by Spanish individuals who fled towards Spain. This required an initial deployment of GNR resources to apprehend the suspects within Portuguese territory, followed by a phase of operational coordination with the Civil Guard.

The success of this exercise lay in the joint and coordinated efforts of the GNR and the Civil Guard, akin police forces with similar responsibilities in policing and criminal repression, as detailed in a statement.

The GNR explained that “Hot Pursuit” was designed to train, refine, and promote interoperability between the two police forces, encouraging knowledge sharing and the consolidation of best practices based on shared values of institutional cooperation.
