GNR arrested more than 500 people (only) during the last week.

The Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) disclosed on Saturday that it conducted a series of operations across the country from May 9 to May 15. These operations aimed at both preventing and combating crime and road traffic accidents, as well as monitoring various regulatory offenses. The operations resulted in 518 arrests, most of which were for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Of the total arrests, 231 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, 142 for driving without a legal permit, 21 for drug trafficking, 15 for theft and robbery, 11 for illegal possession of firearms or prohibited weapons, and eight for domestic violence.

During the police action, the GNR also seized “1,160.12 doses of hashish, 201.3 doses of cocaine, 91.048 doses of cannabis, 19.56 doses of LSD, 23 firearms, 14 bladed or prohibited weapons, 460 rounds of various calibers, 14 vehicles, and 4,840.30 euros in cash.”

In terms of traffic monitoring, the authority reported detecting 9,312 offenses. These included “1,376 speeding violations, 1,216 for failing to conduct mandatory periodic inspections, and 693 related to tachographs.”

Furthermore, other violations included “383 for improper use of mobile phones while driving, 371 for driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, 368 for lacking civil liability insurance, 346 related to defects in lighting and signaling systems, and 272 for improper or non-use of seatbelts and/or child restraint systems.”
