In a statement, the National Republican Guard (GNR) announced that in the early hours of Wednesday, the night surveillance systems of the Coastal and Border Control Unit detected a high-speed vessel moving slowly towards the coastline.
“Simultaneously, three suspicious vehicles were identified heading towards the sandy area, presumably intending to unload cargo or people,” explained the GNR, adding that “after observing signs of a transfer in progress, operational units were immediately deployed.”
During the operation, four military-grade firearms were seized: an AK-47 automatic rifle, an M4 automatic rifle, a CETME-L automatic rifle, and an automatic rifle modified from the AR-15/M4 models.
Additionally, two magazines were seized, containing a total of 48 rounds for the AK-47 automatic rifle, two magazines with 58 rounds for the M4 automatic rifle, and three vehicles.
The operation involved personnel from the UCCF along with reinforcement from a team from the Faro Intervention Detachment (DI).
The detainees, aged between 19 and 48, will appear in the Judicial Court for the imposition of coercive measures.
