GNR barracks project in Matosinhos completed and awaiting MAI

The Matosinhos City Council in the Porto district has announced that a new building, set to be constructed in Freixieiro, is awaiting only the final approval from the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) to proceed.

The new barracks will be located on a municipal plot previously occupied by a nursery, situated between Avenida Mário Brito (EN107) and the TIR terminal. The location was strategically chosen to strengthen the presence of the GNR in the parishes of Perafita, Lavra, and Santa Cruz do Bispo, as well as adjacent areas of Maia and Vila do Conde.

This investment is part of a cooperation protocol between the municipality and the State, which includes the free granting of surface rights for 50 years and the municipal creation of the technical project.

“The initiative aligns with the national plan for modernizing the infrastructure of security forces,” the city council emphasized.

According to the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, this new detachment is a decisive step in improving working conditions for GNR professionals and enhancing public safety in the region.

GNR troops are currently temporarily housed in the old Biquinha school, having vacated their previous quarters in Quinta da Conceição due to inadequate conditions for operational activities.

In August 2021, Matosinhos City Council committed to the design of the new GNR barracks, citing the “urgency” for this police force to have new facilities.

The municipality’s decision to advance the project is tied to the “volume of existing processes” at the MAI’s Secretary-General and the need for a “prompt response” to the situation.
