The operation, which will run until Sunday, targets areas with a high incidence of traffic accidents and speeding violations, aiming to promote road safety across continental Portugal, the National Republican Guard (GNR) announced in a statement.
The GNR emphasizes that speeding remains one of the leading causes of serious traffic accidents in Portugal, reducing a driver’s reaction time to unexpected events and exacerbating the consequences due to the increased force of impact.
It also highlights speeding as the most common traffic violation across European countries and the primary cause of road fatalities in Europe.
Through this initiative, the GNR aims to raise public awareness about the importance of adopting safer driving behaviors, particularly among professional drivers, to enhance road safety and protect lives.
During 2024, GNR officers monitored 13,151,582 vehicles and recorded 9,644 cases of speeding.
This initiative also serves to remind drivers of the importance of adopting safer behaviors to promote road safety and protect human lives, it underscores.
The GNR operation is part of the European Roads Policing Network (RoadPol), an organization created by Europe’s traffic police to improve road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.
At the end of 2021, the GNR became a RoadPol member, incorporating the organization’s planned operations into its operational planning.
Within this context, RoadPol has identified four priority action areas in road safety: roads, vehicles, users, and speed.
Consistent with previous years, RoadPol has devised a road safety enforcement operations plan for the current year, according to the GNR.
These European operations primarily aim to create a safer road environment through simultaneous intervention in the main causes of accidents, encouraging users to adopt safer behaviors.
