The National Republican Guard (GNR) collected a litter of brown long-eared bats (‘Plecotus auritus’) last Friday, June 27, in the locality of Chãos, in the municipality of Fundão.
In a statement sent to the newsrooms this Monday, the GNR explained that the collection was carried out by the Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA), following an “alert.”
“Following an alert reporting the presence of a litter of brown long-eared bats in an abandoned house, located in the locality of Chãos, SEPNA elements went to the site and collected three adult bats and four young ones,” the note reads.
The bats were then taken to the Wildlife Recovery Center (CERAS) in Castelo Branco for veterinary evaluation, health monitoring, and rehabilitation process.
After evaluation, they will be returned to their natural habitat.
In the note, the GNR emphasized that through SEPNA, animal protection is a daily concern and called for the reporting of environmental situations.
To report, the SOS Environment and Territory Line (808 200 520) can be used, which operates “permanently for reporting infractions or clarifying doubts.”
The GNR highlighted that SEPNA “constitutes itself as an environmental police, competent to oversee, supervise, report, and investigate all infractions to the legislation aimed at protecting nature, the environment, and natural heritage, throughout the national territory, without prejudice to the own competencies of nature stewards.”
