Three individuals were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday after stealing hundreds of tobacco packs in the Setúbal district. The trio was apprehended during an operation by the National Republican Guard (GNR) in Barreiro, Setúbal district.
The GNR, in a statement released on Thursday, identified the detainees as two men and a woman aged between 32 and 55. The group is scheduled to appear before the Setúbal Judicial Court on Thursday for the determination of appropriate coercive measures.
“During a road inspection operation conducted in the town of Santo António da Charneca, the Guard’s officers approached a vehicle and discovered it was transporting various tobacco packs and an amount of cash, the origin of which was not duly justified,” the statement reads, noting that 350 packs of tobacco were involved.
The police investigations further revealed that “the aforementioned material had been stolen from a commercial establishment in the town of Poceirão, in the municipality of Palmela.”
Alongside the seizure of 350 packs of tobacco of various brands, whose value is undisclosed, 171.30 euros in cash, a bottle of nitrous oxide, and various tools used in thefts were also confiscated.
