The National Republican Guard (GNR), through its Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF), detected a high-speed boat carrying 24 migrants on March 29, during a patrol in the Mediterranean Sea near Almeria, Spain, using the Coastal Patrol Boat (LPC) Bojador.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the security force explained that as part of a coastal patrol operation aimed at detecting illicit cross-border activities and controlling irregular immigration flows, “a suspicious high-speed vessel with migrants on board was identified in the Mediterranean Sea.”
Faced with the situation, GNR personnel alerted Spain’s Guardia Civil and “proceeded to track the speedboat with the support of Frontex aerial resources.”
“Upon reaching land, the migrants attempted to flee, and the Guardia Civil impounded the suspicious boat, initiating a land search operation, which resulted in intercepting a total of 24 migrants and one facilitator,” the statement said.
It’s noteworthy that GNR, through the Coastal and Border Control Unit, deployed the LPC Bojador in the ‘Joint Operation SPAIN – INDALO 2025,’ led by the Guardia Civil, taking place from February 19 to April 16, 2025, under the aegis of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency.
This operation is conducted within the framework of operational coordination at the external borders of the European Union, with the primary aim of enhancing border surveillance, controlling irregular immigration flows, combating cross-border crime, strengthening European cooperation in coast guard activities, and supporting search and rescue operations.
