A member of the National Republican Guard (GNR) who was embezzling funds from traffic fines in Bragança has been arrested by the Judiciary Police.
In a statement sent Friday, authorities explained that the officer is “strongly suspected of the crimes of document forgery, computer-related fraud, and embezzlement committed in the course of his police duties.”
The officer, stationed in Mirandela, had his home searched on Thursday, according to reports.
“The officer currently serving in the Bragança Territorial Command committed the mentioned illegal acts during the monitoring of infractions outlined in the Road Code and in processing the respective administrative offense cases,” detailed the Judiciary Police.
The 45-year-old allegedly failed to formally register and/or falsified several administrative offense reports, misappropriating amounts corresponding to fines paid by offenders, thus defrauding public funds.
The individual will now face an initial judicial interrogation to determine suitable coercive measures.
