
A member of the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) was killed and three others were injured during a patrol operation on the Guadiana River near Alcoutim, in the Algarve, on Monday night. A group of drug traffickers is on the run.
The incident involved a collision between a GNR vessel and a civilian boat on the Guadiana River, as reported by Civil Protection sources.
“The alert for the collision was given at 11:21 PM. Further details on the accident that occurred on the Guadiana River in Alcoutim, Faro district, are unknown,” according to the Algarve Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command.
CNN Portugal reported that the incident occurred during a Coastal Control Unit pursuit of a North African drug traffickers’ speedboat.
The vessels reportedly collided, resulting in a fire breaking out on the speedboat used by the traffickers, the channel added.
