GNR Nature Protection Service seizes illegal snake in Madeira

The Nature and Environment Protection Service (SEPNA) of the National Republican Guard (GNR) identified a 35-year-old man for illegal possession of a reptile and seized a corn snake (‘Pantherophis guttatus’) in the municipality of Santa Cruz, Madeira.

SEPNA officials traveled to Caniço after receiving a report of illegal reptile possession, as stated by the military in a press release. On-site, “they carried out police actions that led to a house search.”

The operation resulted in the seizure of the specimen and the identification of a man, “with a report of offense filed for lack of a license to keep exotic animals in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.”

The National Republican Guard also warns that the “possession of any snake species is expressly prohibited in the Region, with exceptions only for legally provided cases, such as zoos or duly authorized entities.”
