
A fatal accident on the Regional Road 242 (ER243) in Monforte, Portalegre district, claimed the life of a Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) officer this Sunday morning.
José António Mocisso Lérias, aged 49, a native of Elvas, died after his vehicle veered off the road between Monforte and Santa Eulália.
In a statement shared on social media, the Portalegre Territorial Command of the GNR expressed its “sorrow for the death of comrade” José António Mocisso de Lérias, who “served at the Fronteira Territorial Post and passed away today, October 5, 2025.”
“The Unit has become poorer. One of our own has left us,” the statement reads.
“To the grieving family and friends, the Officers, Sergeants, Guards, members of the Forest Guard career, and civilian employees of this Command offer our deepest condolences and express gratitude to the excellent professional and friend José Lérias, who was with us for the past 29 years in fulfilling his mission,” it adds.
A source from the Alto Alentejo Sub-Regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection reported to Lusa agency that a man died following the car accident he was involved in along ER243.
The same source confirmed that the deceased was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle.
The death was declared on-site by the doctor from Portalegre’s Medical Emergency and Reanimation Vehicle (VMER), and the body was transported to the Portalegre hospital morgue.
The rescue operations involved the Monforte Fire Department, the National Emergency and Reanimation Institute (INEM), and the GNR, with a total of 14 operatives supported by eight vehicles.
