GNR operation catches drivers at 181 km/h in the early hours

The Republican National Guard (GNR) commenced Operation ‘RoadPol – Speed’ at midnight on Monday, a European campaign focused on monitoring speed limits to enhance road safety.

At the A12 tolls, in the Pinhal Novo area, heading towards Setúbal-Lisboa, the GNR began its surveillance around 7:00 AM. Within just an hour, ten vehicles were fined for speeding, with one reaching a speed of 181 kilometers per hour.

In 2024, the GNR identified approximately ten thousand drivers exceeding speed limits. Fines range from 120 to 500 euros.

“Speeding is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents and exacerbates the consequences of these incidents. We are attentive to these infractions to reduce road accidents in the country and across Europe, as the GNR is part of this European network of traffic police,” declared Major Rito Costa of the GNR’s National Traffic Unit to RTP.

Between this Monday and April 13, the GNR operation will mainly target areas with a high incidence of accidents.

“This operation will focus primarily on the major roadways of the country, those with the highest accident rates where such infractions are commonly observed. We always urge drivers to respect speed limits and adjust their driving speed to the road and weather conditions, which have recently been unfavorable,” added the GNR major.

In a statement, the GNR noted speeding as one of the “main causes of serious road accidents” in Portugal and the “leading cause of road deaths across Europe.”
