The National Republican Guard indicated today that it participated in the rescue of 82 migrants in Italy, together with the Italian coast guard, as part of the mission it is carrying out as part of the European border control agency Frontex.
In a statement, the National Republican Guard (GNR) says that soldiers from the Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF) with the coastal patrol boat Bojador integrated, at dawn on Saturday, off Crotone, Italy, in a search and rescue operation of 82 migrants, in a mission coordinated by the Italian coast guard as part of the joint Frontex operation.
According to the corporation, the GNR speedboat was activated, around 8:58 pm on Saturday, after the Italian authorities alerted it to a sailboat suspected of carrying migrants on board.
The GNR reports that at 04:30, the vessel was detected and, around 05:00, began the transfer of migrants on board the Italian coast guard vessel, while the Portuguese speedboat, together with a merchant vessel, assisted in an attempt to ensure protection during the rescue maneuvers given the strong sea agitation that was felt.
That security force also indicated that the operation ended at 12:10 with the safe arrival at the Port of Rocella Ionica.
The National Republican Guard, through the Coastal and Border Control Unit and the coastal patrol speedboat Bojador, has been participating since March in the Frontex joint operation “THEMIS 2023” – Italy, as part of the operational coordination of the European Union’s external borders, to control migration flows and prevent cross-border crime, which will run until July 12.
