GNR recorded 1,942 frauds against the elderly up to September 15.

The National Republican Guard (GNR) reported that from January 1 to September 15, three people were arrested for fraud crimes, 57 for theft crimes, and 32 for robbery crimes.

The 2025 edition of Operation Censos Sénior begins today on International Day of Older Persons, having identified over 42,000 elderly individuals living alone and/or isolated last year.

The operation, involving around 420 military personnel, will run until November 16 across the entire national territory, including patrol and awareness activities aimed at older individuals to reinforce self-protection and security behaviors.

The initiative aims to “warn about security behaviors that can reduce the risk of the elderly becoming crime victims, particularly in situations of violence, fraud, and theft.”

From January to September 15, the GNR conducted 8,160 awareness actions, including 569 classroom sessions and 7,591 door-to-door actions.

In the 2024 edition, the GNR identified 42,873 elderly individuals living alone and/or isolated, or in vulnerable situations.

Cases of greater vulnerability were reported to the competent authorities, particularly social support entities, for follow-up.

Guarda was the district with the highest number of isolated or living alone elderly identified (5,606), followed by Vila Real (5,143), Bragança (3,367), Faro (3,496), Viseu (3,325), Beja (2,998), Portalegre (2,772), Évora (2,462), and Santarém (2,020).

Last year’s edition saw the GNR conduct 369 classroom awareness actions and 4,859 door-to-door actions, reaching a total of 31,210 elderly persons.

Operation Censos Sénior has been ongoing since 2011, updating the geographical identification of this population annually.
