GNR records (until October) 2,800 cases of computer fraud. Any advice?

The GNR announced the commencement of a security operation scheduled to run from Monday until December 31st, drawing attention to a significant rise in internet scams involving instant money transfer applications. In the previous year, 3,392 incidents were recorded, while in the current year up to October 31st, 2,856 occurrences were noted.

Additionally, scams related to the unlawful acquisition of user data amounted to 2,651 cases in 2024, with 1,926 incidents registered up to October 31st, 2025.

As part of the operation, the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) has strengthened police patrols in commercial areas and is conducting awareness campaigns aimed at both merchants and customers, focusing on self-protection measures against theft, robbery, severe threats, or vandalism.

“Therefore, from ‘Black Friday’ until the end of the Christmas festivities, the GNR is enhancing close contact with merchants and customers via foot patrols in commercial spaces to boost effective security and enhance the perception of safety,” the statement noted.

This year’s “Comércio Seguro 2025” operation is once again in partnership with the Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE), with notebooks containing security tips being distributed to merchants and clients.

The GNR also warns of the increasing risk of scams and fraud associated with Black Friday.

“During this period, attempts to deceive by scammers exploiting the heightened demand for offers and discounts are common,” the statement highlighted.

Emphasizing vigilance and caution, the GNR warns against common fraudulent practices such as fake websites, overly attractive offers, and the misuse of personal or banking data.

The GNR advises merchants to ensure their premises have well-lit entry and exit points, confirm that doors and windows are properly secured when closing, avoid keeping large sums of cash, vary their routines for bank deposits, and keep the GNR’s contact information readily available.

Customers are urged to be skeptical of offers “too good to be true,” make purchases only through official and secure websites (https://__), refrain from giving personal or banking details to unverified entities, and keep purchase receipts.

Individuals are also recommended to keep track of their wallets and personal belongings in crowded areas and avoid carrying large amounts of cash when shopping.
