
A nationwide operation named ‘Dromedário’ was conducted last Thursday across mainland Portugal by the Fiscal Action Unit (UAF) of the Republican National Guard (GNR), as detailed in a statement from the security force.
The operation aimed primarily at enhancing the enforcement of the Goods in Circulation Regime (RBC), with a particular focus on fulfilling fiscal obligations, especially regarding Value Added Tax (VAT), according to the GNR.
Inspection efforts targeted wholesale markets and goods transportation on the main road networks accessing these markets.
The operation led to the issuance of 144 administrative offense notices after inspecting 537 vehicles and two commercial establishments.
The offenses included 140 violations of the goods circulation regime, two infractions regarding Alcohol and Alcoholic Beverage Tax, one Vehicle Tax (ISV) violation, and one case of selling prohibited psychoactive substances.
The operation engaged 63 military personnel from the Fiscal Action Detachments (DAF) of Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon, Évora, and Faro.
Prior to “Dromedário,” from March 21 to 27, the GNR carried out activities aimed at preventing and combating crime and road accidents, as well as inspecting various administrative offenses.
This period saw the arrest of 392 individuals caught in the act, including 156 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 117 for driving without a valid license, 23 for drug trafficking, 21 for domestic violence, 16 for theft and robbery, and 13 for illegal possession of weapons and a prohibited weapon.
Seizures included over 1,295 doses of hashish, 367 of MDMA, 332 of cocaine, and 4.8 doses of amphetamines, along with 25 firearms, 13 knives or prohibited weapons, 140 rounds of ammunition, 38 vehicles, one boat, and 1,224.57 euros in cash.
Regarding traffic enforcement in the same period, the GNR detected a total of 9,305 violations, highlighting 1,007 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, 2,273 for speeding, 446 related to tachographs, 398 for lighting and signaling faults, 307 for using a mobile phone while driving, 257 for lack of civil liability insurance, 240 for driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, and 236 for improper or non-use of seat belts or child restraint systems.
