GNR starts today operation to prevent illegal introduction of wine into the country

The GNR announced the launch of Operation “Dionísio”, which begins today and continues until October 31. The operation aims to gather information and prevent the illegal introduction of wine into the Portuguese market, thereby ensuring a stable environment for operators and the proper functioning of the sector.

The organization notes that Portugal typically has a deficit in production, which results in the legal entry of bulk wines from Spain, identified as Spanish or European Union (EU) wines.

“Conversely, the illegal movement of wine occurs in tankers or vats and is introduced into the accounts of wines with protected designation of origin (DOP) and protected geographical indication (IGP). The wines may enter legally but are blended with Portuguese wines,” the GNR stated.

The GNR highlights that during the harvest season and until November 30, there is an increased influx of wine masses (musts or bulk wines), raising the likelihood of undocumented and/or fraudulent entry into storage facilities.
