The Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) recorded 684 road accidents involving agricultural vehicles last year, resulting in 52 fatalities, 85 serious injuries, and 262 minor injuries, the agency reported today.
In 2023, there were 602 accidents involving agricultural vehicles, with 40 fatalities, 65 serious injuries, and 224 minor injuries.
On the occasion of the launch of Operation ‘Campo Seguro 2025’, the GNR stated its goal to raise public awareness on adopting preventive behaviors against theft of agricultural products and machinery, non-precious metals, and labor exploitation situations that may constitute human trafficking.
The operation, concluding on February 15, 2026, also aims to promote the adoption of safe practices in the use and driving of agricultural and forestry vehicles, contributing to accident prevention and reducing associated incidents.
“In this context, patrolling and inspection activities will be intensified, tailored to the seasonality of crops and regional characteristics, focusing on locations, days, and times of highest risk according to crime history,” stated the GNR.
The agency also noted that control and inspection of agricultural and forestry product transportation at land border crossing points will be conducted in coordination with the Guardia Civil to combat cross-border crime.
Regarding road accidents with agricultural vehicles, the GNR identified common causes as distraction, lack of dexterity, and irregular maneuvers.
In accidents on private property, common causes are loss of control, uneven terrain, and tractor overturning.
The GNR advises users not to neglect vehicle maintenance, to use lighting and signaling accessories per the law, to attend theoretical and practical training sessions, and not to drive under the influence of alcohol, fatigue, or at speeds unsuitable for the vehicle’s condition and cargo.
The GNR also reminded that protective structures, such as the ‘Santo António’ roll bar, can prevent driver fatalities or reduce the severity of injuries.
