
The cultural space gnration announced that its annual anniversary celebration will coincide with the 110th anniversary of Theatro Circo, with festivities scheduled for May 2 and 3.
The celebrations at gnration will begin with a performance by Brazilian band Boogarins on May 2. The festivities will continue with a ‘gnration open day’ on May 3, which will be open to the public free of charge.
The program on that day includes performances by Fogo Fogo, Riza Said, Robert Auki Aubrey Lowe (also known as Lichens), Sereias, Tricla, Sheri Vari, and Zancudo Berraco.
On May 16, Jorge Cruz will take the stage at gnration to present “Transumante,” an album he released last year, marking his first solo work in over 13 years.
Later in May, on the 25th, acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee will perform with his new quartet, Monster. The ensemble also features clarinetist Susanna Gartmayer, bassist John Edwards, and drummer Mariá Portugal.
Jazz returns to gnration in July as part of the “Julho é de Jazz” series, which will also be held at Theatro Circo.
On July 4, Portuguese musicians Ricardo Toscano and Gabriel Ferrandini will perform. The saxophonist and drummer collaborated in 2020 under the challenge of composer and producer Eduardo Queiroz, resulting in the album “Unpredictable Sessions,” released last year.
Invited by gnration, guitarist Ava Mendoza, bassist Brad Jones, AKA Alias and Avant Lounge, along with drummer and percussionist Hamid Drake, will perform live on July 5.
Saxophonist Zoh Amba’s performance is scheduled for July 10 with her Zoh Amba Sun Ensemble, including pianist Lex Korten, bassist Caroline Morton, and drummer Russell Carter.
The Braga-based quartet FourWard, featuring José João Viana on electric guitar, Gonçalo Cravinho Lopes on bass, Simão Duque on trumpet, and Tomás Alvarenga on synthesizers and drums, will present their debut album on July 12, supported by gnration.
In June, the Zona Franca cycle, organized by gnration, Theatro Circo, and Centro Cultural Vila Flor in Guimarães, will begin.
On June 9, a work born from the artistic collaboration between dancer/choreographer Piny and rapper xullaji will be showcased, having been developed during an artistic residency in Guimarães and debuting on May 24 at Centro Cultura Vila Flor.
The hybrid gamelan/percussion octet Ensemble Nist-Nah, led by Australian drummer and percussionist Will Guthrie, will perform on June 18.
On June 28, gnration will host the premiere of “Psiconáutica,” an interdisciplinary piece by Braga composer Sara Marita, blending electronic music, voice, multimedia, and lighting work.
The exhibition program includes “Still Moving Inside Me” by visual artist Tatiana Macedo and “Ana Vieira, Cadernos de Montagem,” showcasing works by the historic Portuguese artist alongside her notebooks and installation instructions. Both exhibitions run until June 28.
On July 10, the “GINESIS” exhibition by Mexican interdisciplinary artist Mario de Veja will open, inviting the public to reflect on the complexities behind the use of translation as a tool for historical indoctrination, colonization, and cultural imposition.
The final year exhibition by Media Arts Master’s students from the University of Minho will open on July 18. Before this, on June 11, the space will host a contemporary music concert by Music Bachelor students from the University of Minho.
In August, the gnration’s outdoor courtyard will host the free-entry Cinema no Pátio program, featuring screenings such as “On Falling” by Laura Carreira.
In the spring, gnration will launch a new discussion series on Artificial Intelligence (AI), art, and culture titled “AI Cultural Sabotage,” curated by researcher Alessandro Ludovico.
The first talk on May 7 will feature researcher Kate Crawford and visual artist Vladan Joler. The second, set for June 11, will include Ranjodh Singh Dhaliwal, a professor of digital humanities, artificial intelligence, and media studies at the University of Basel, Switzerland.
This series will be conducted exclusively online and is open to the public for free participation.
Between May and August, gnration will also host initiatives as part of Braga 25 – Capital Portuguesa da Cultura.
