Chega MP Filipe Melo, who recently made headlines for blowing kisses at Socialist MP Isabel Moreira in parliament, is under fire again following an incident involving MP Eva Cruzeiro. During a joint hearing of the Culture, Communication, Youth and Sports Committee and the Budget, Finance and Public Administration Committee on Wednesday afternoon, Melo told Cruzeiro to “go back to her land” while she was speaking.
The confrontation occurred as Cruzeiro addressed the minister of the presidency regarding plans to “enhance training and capacity” of public institution staff working with immigrants. She emphasized that a “far-right party in Portugal has greatly polarized our society and spread racist and xenophobic messages,” which escalated the exchange.
Before MP Pedro Pinto had the floor, several members of the Chega bench were already responding and hurling insults at the Socialist MP. Filipe Melo, standing and gesticulating, shouted, “Go back to your land.”
“I am in my land, esteemed MP, this is our land!” responded Cruzeiro.
Watch the moment in the video below, starting at 2h33m:
Following the incident, Eva Cruzeiro expressed her reaction on social media, asserting that “Portugal has no owners” and that Chega “does not represent the majority of the Portuguese people.”
“CHEGA and its MPs will eventually learn the obvious: I am in my land. In our land! A country where 77 percent of voters did not vote for them in the general elections and 88 percent rejected them in the municipal elections. In both elections, the Socialist Party received more votes. In the last, almost three times as many,” she wrote.
“Portugal has no owners. It belongs to all of us. People of various races, ages, religions, and ideas. We are a plural democracy. Those who haven’t understood it yet must learn. And we, with patience, firmness, and tranquility, will ensure that they do,” Eva Cruzeiro argued further.

MP Isabel Moreira also reacted to this heated exchange, questioning: “Will these incidents continue without consequences?”
Imagino que vá desmentir. Este deputado ontem berrou isto. E o PAR? Ouviu certamente a reação de @EvaCruzeiro . Estas coisas vão continuar a acontecer sem consequências? https://t.co/hmCezO9M8W

Previously, she had filed a complaint against Filipe Melo, in September, citing “allegedly inappropriate and offensive behavior” while he was serving as deputy secretary of the board.
During a parliamentary session, Melo allegedly directed disrespectful gestures at her, including blowing kisses and making signals to silence her in an alleged attempt to suppress.
In response to this complaint, the president of the Assembly of the Republic requested an inquiry by the transparency committee for possible “serious irregularities” committed by Filipe Melo in violation of “the duties of MPs” during his tenure as deputy secretary of the parliament board.
