“The night was calmer. Things are under control. At least there is no area here [that worries us], except for a part near Trevim,” said Rui Sampaio, the Mayor of Góis, to the Lusa news agency.
Speaking by phone from Aigra Velha at 10:15 AM, the mayor noted that “there was a helicopter drop in the Trevim area, so it is being monitored.”
“[That area] might potentially create a more concerning situation, but elsewhere, in areas that burned heavily, we are not seeing any hotspots that could cause concern,” he stated.
In the municipality of Góis, “things are calm and controlled,” the mayor expressed hope that today “will be quieter for all those involved” in battling the fire affecting the district.
“The expectation is for this [fire] to be resolved as quickly as possible,” said Rui Sampaio, expressing concern about the fire being in a zone with difficult access for ground teams, where a helicopter was operating this morning.
The area is under surveillance, and “a small part” of the front heading towards Trevim remains active, but actions during the night “aimed to prevent its progression,” he explained.
“It is a difficult access zone and is being monitored constantly, and it is expected not to pose a greater danger,” he concluded.
The Góis City Council operates a logistics base at the Casa da Cultura, providing social and psychological support to the affected population.
“We have seven people who spent the night there, from some surrounding villages, more debilitated individuals, and we are providing direct support,” the mayor stated.
He indicated that the accommodation of the seven people was done “as a precaution.”
There were no villages affected by the fire, but as a precaution, some residents chose to spend the night there.
“Others, with more delicate health issues, and because they needed other types of support, also chose to stay in that area, and that happened, and everything is calm,” he said.
This fire, which began on Thursday in the municipality of Lousã, moved to the municipality of Góis on Friday, leading the local government to activate the Municipal Emergency and Civil Protection Plan.
As of 10:50 AM, according to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection’s website, 511 personnel, supported by 161 vehicles and one aerial unit, were combatting the fire in the Lousã mountains.
