Goodbye, summer? The coming days will have “above normal” rain (and cooler temperatures)

As the summer days come to a close, those who haven’t yet enjoyed the season might find their time running out. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) released an extended forecast on Thursday, indicating that the coming days will see “above normal” levels of precipitation, while the average temperature will be “below normal.”

In its weather forecast covering the period from August 25 to September 21, IPMA states that the “total weekly precipitation” will reach “above normal” levels until August 31.

“For the total weekly precipitation, values above the normal range (1 to 30 mm) are expected from 08/25 to 08/31 across the entire country, excluding the Algarve region,” reads the note published on Facebook.

The forecast predicts that “the probability of total weekly precipitation being above normal ranges from 24 to 92%.”

Regarding the average weekly temperature, it is expected to be “below normal across the whole country (-3 to -0.5°C),” with a probability ranging from 24 to 90% that the average weekly temperature will be lower than usual.

However, in the following weeks, “it is not possible to identify the existence of a statistically significant signal” concerning both precipitation and average temperature.
