During a debate on RTP, the former Navy Chief of Staff and the former leader of the Iniciativa Liberal expressed significant disagreement only when the topic of independence was discussed. Cotrim de Figueiredo argued that having been part of a political party does not serve as a “record” against a future candidacy for President of the Republic, whereas the admiral touted the nonpartisan nature of his candidacy as an advantage.
Cotrim de Figueiredo asserted that he transcends the political space of Iniciativa Liberal, while Henrique Gouveia suggested that his opponent would bring “ideological concepts” to the presidency.
“You will not be able to act independently,” accused the admiral. Toward the end of the debate, lasting about 30 minutes and moderated by journalist Vítor Gonçalves, the Iniciativa Liberal MEP remarked that this was one of the greatest falsehoods said about him so far.
Throughout the rest of the debate, there were various points of consensus between the two opponents, particularly when faced with the news of surveillance extending to former Prime Minister António Costa—a case where both called for prompt explanations from the General Prosecutor’s Office and led them to advocate for a reform of the justice system.
Regarding labor law reform, Cotrim de Figueiredo and Gouveia e Melo agreed on the need for flexibility, although the former Navy Chief of Staff cautioned about the necessity of safeguarding core workers’ rights. As for the privatization of TAP, supported by the liberal MEP, it was acknowledged by the former coordinator of the COVID-19 vaccination process, provided that national strategic interests are preserved.
